It has no enclosing wall, no formal entrance, and no tidy arrangement of stones; just a roughly oval area, about ten metres across at its longest, with several stones set into the earth in no particular order. That informality is not neglect or accident. It is characteristic of the places known in Irish as cillíní, informal burial grounds used for those who, under Catholic Church law, could not be interred in consecrated ground. Unbaptised infants were the most common occupants, though stillborn children, and occasionally others considered marginal by the Church, were also buried in such places. They occupy old raths, forgotten field corners, the edges of townlands, anywhere that existed a little outside the ordinary social world.

The site at Pollagh appears in McCaffrey's 1952 survey, which catalogued it among the region's lesser-documented monuments. By the time of that record, and apparently still thereafter, the ground had become densely overgrown and was being used to dump refuse. That combination, a place once set apart for grief now functioning as a convenient tip, is a quietly uncomfortable detail. These burial grounds were never officially maintained; families came quietly, often at night, to inter their children without ceremony, and the sites were rarely marked in any permanent way. Without sustained local memory, they can easily slip from recognition entirely, the stones settling further into the grass with each passing decade.
