Burial Grounds
In the townland of Rathoonagh in County Mayo, there lies a children's burial ground of the kind that was once a quiet fixture of the Irish rural landscape.
These sites, known in Irish as cillíní (the singular is cillín), were used for centuries to inter unbaptised infants and others considered, under Catholic doctrine, ineligible for burial in consecrated ground. They occupy a particular and often melancholy position in Irish social history: neither fully sacred nor entirely forgotten, set apart from the main churchyard yet carefully chosen and, in their own way, tended.
