Church, Ballynora, Co. Cork

In Ballynora, a quiet corner of County Cork, a bungalow sits on ground that was once, according to local tradition, the site of an early church and its associated graveyard.

There is nothing visible to indicate this now. No stonework, no grave markers, no trace of any enclosure. The site is noted on record largely because the memory of it survived in the surrounding community long enough to be written down, even as the physical evidence disappeared entirely.

Early medieval churches in Ireland were often modest structures, sometimes timber-built in their earliest phases, and their graveyards could be modest too, enclosed by a simple earthen bank or a low stone wall. Without upstanding remains, such sites depend almost entirely on local knowledge to keep them from being forgotten altogether. At Ballynora, that knowledge was enough to earn the site a formal listing, even if the listing itself amounts to little more than an acknowledgement of absence. The church and graveyard have their own separate record references, suggesting they were once considered distinct features worth distinguishing, though neither has left anything to see.
