Church, Brittas, Co. Cork

Beneath the pasture of a gently south-facing slope at Brittas in County Cork lies a church that has, for all practical purposes, ceased to exist above ground.

No stone, no wall, no rubble mound breaks the grass to signal its presence. What is known comes almost entirely from a single map: the 1842 Ordnance Survey six-inch sheet, which marks a rectangular outline, roughly twelve metres along its longer axis, defined by a broken line in the way cartographers indicate a structure already ruinous or uncertain at the time of survey. A second rectangular form, somewhat larger at around twenty metres, appears on the same map about eight metres to the south-east. By the time a revision of the area was recorded in 1936, the surrounding locality was named 'Shansepeal' on the OS six-inch map, a placename that likely preserves a version of 'sean séipéal', the Irish for 'old chapel'.

The site's connections extend beyond the field itself. A laneway running to the east of the church once linked it, according to Kavanagh writing in 1991, to Gobnait's cell at Abby's Well, approximately one kilometre to the south. Saint Gobnait is a significant figure in Cork devotion, associated particularly with Ballyvourney, and the presence of a connecting route between this church and a well bearing her name suggests the site was once part of a small local religious landscape of the early Christian or medieval period. That laneway, like the church walls themselves, has since disappeared from the terrain. The one tangible object to have emerged from the site is a candlestick found here around the 1850s, noted by Bowman in 1934, though no further detail about its form or whereabouts appears to have survived in the record.
