Church, Burnchurch, Co. Kilkenny

In the fields between Burnchurch and Ballybur, a church and its graveyard have been, as one local historian put it, "entirely blotted out.

" No stone marks the spot. The only way to see the outline of the building now is from above, where a cropmark, a difference in vegetation growth caused by buried stone or disturbed soil beneath, traces the footprint of a structure roughly twelve metres long and eight metres wide on satellite imagery captured in August 2015. On the ground, there is nothing.

The place does not appear at all on the first edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1839, which suggests it had already vanished from the visible landscape by then. By the 1947 revision, it warranted only the cautious label "Church (Site of)." What fills the gap is tradition and the work of two early twentieth-century local historians. Writing in 1905, Carrigan described a sandy rise of ground near St Dallan's Well, in the same field as the well itself, where both a church and a churchyard once stood. Commins, writing the following year, located the site a short distance into the fields in the direction of Ballybur, and added a detail that anchors the whole place in older ecclesiastical geography: the ancient name of Burnchurch was Kiltrayn, and St Dallan was patron of the parish. Holy wells in Ireland were frequently associated with early Christian saints and often served as focal points for local devotion long after the buildings beside them disappeared; the well here, dedicated to St Dallan, survives close to where the church once stood.

The site is not accessible in any formal sense, and the church outline is not visible from the ground. The cropmark is clearest in the satellite imagery taken during dry summer conditions, when moisture differences in the soil bring buried features to the surface as tonal variations in the grass above.
