Church, Clone, Co. Wicklow

On an east-facing slope at the foot of a ridge in County Wicklow, there is a place that carries no headstones, no visible grave-markers, and no standing church.

What remains is a low, broad wall enclosing a subcircular area roughly eighteen metres across, set within a larger D-shaped enclosure that backs onto a stream along its straight northeastern edge. The 1838 Ordnance Survey six-inch map labels it plainly as the "Site of Church & Graveyard", which tells you that even by the early nineteenth century, the church itself had already gone. The only internal feature is a line of stones that may once have formed a plinth, perhaps a base for an altar or a cross. Beyond that, the ground gives very little away.

What local tradition does preserve is quietly sobering. The site is said to have been used, at least until the turn of the twentieth century, for the burial of unbaptised infants. This practice was widespread in Ireland for centuries, rooted in Catholic theological convention that held unbaptised children to be excluded from consecrated ground. These burial places, sometimes called cillíní, were typically set apart at liminal locations: old ecclesiastical sites, the edges of townlands, places neither fully of the parish nor entirely outside it. A disused church enclosure on a hillside, already half-forgotten, would have fitted that purpose precisely. The D-shaped enclosure here, defined by its relationship to the stream, follows a form often associated with early ecclesiastical settlements in Ireland, where a curving boundary and a water source together marked out a sacred or protected space.
