Church, Dunmurraghill, Co. Kildare

At Dunmurraghill in County Kildare, there is a church that no longer exists in any visible form, yet it remains recorded as a place of historical significance. The walls were pulled down entirely, and by 1981 there was nothing left on the surface to suggest a building had ever stood there at all. What remains is essentially an absence, a site defined by what has been removed rather than what survives.

The church stood within a graveyard, which itself is recorded separately as a distinct site. Beyond that spatial relationship, and the single line preserved in the Ordnance Survey Letters compiled by Michael Herity in 2005, the documentary record is thin. The original Ordnance Survey correspondence, compiled during the nineteenth-century mapping of Ireland, occasionally captured brief descriptions of local features from informants and local knowledge, and it is through that tradition that this church enters the record at all. Without those notes, it might have left no trace whatsoever beyond the graveyard it once served.
