Church Field, Rathkennan, Co. Tipperary

A field in County Tipperary carries the name Church Field on maps going back to at least 1840, yet no church is visible within it.

No ruins break the surface, no foundations announce themselves, and the precise location of the building that gave the field its name remains unknown. It sits on a natural hillock with open views in every direction, a position that would have made good practical sense for a medieval parish church, and roughly seventy metres to the south, across the road, stands a motte and bailey, the earthwork remains of an early Norman fortification. The two monuments together suggest a settlement of some consequence once occupied this quiet stretch of flat Tipperary ground.

The documentary record is patchy but suggestive. In 1452, Holy Cross Abbey was granted the vicarage of Rathkellan by Archbishop Cantwell, placing the church within an established ecclesiastical network during the later medieval period. By the mid-seventeenth century the place had not been forgotten: the Civil Survey describes the street of Rathkienane with its castle and church, and the Down Survey map of 1655 to 1656 depicts the church explicitly. Yet when the first edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map was produced around 1840, something had already changed. The field is labelled Church Field, acknowledging the memory of what stood there, but the church itself is not marked, and a quarry appears in the northern part of the field. A later twenty-five inch OS map places a quarry in the south-western portion instead. Whether the quarrying disturbed or consumed the fabric of the building, or whether the structure had simply collapsed and been absorbed into the ground long before the surveyors arrived, is not recorded. The church exists now mainly as a name on old maps and a grant in a fifteenth-century ecclesiastical document.
