Church, Grave Yard, Glebe, Feighcullen, Co. Kildare

Somewhere beneath the floor plan of a nineteenth-century parish church in County Kildare, an older building has effectively vanished. The site at Feighcullen carries no visible trace of the medieval structure that once stood here, yet the ground itself may remember it. A single chamfered stone, the kind of dressed-edge finish associated with medieval ecclesiastical masonry, has been identified in the southern quadrant of the graveyard, quietly repurposed as a grave marker. It is one of the more modest ways a church can survive its own disappearance.

The place has a long documentary trail. In the ecclesiastical taxation of the Diocese of Kildare carried out between 1302 and 1306, the church appears under the name 'Fythcolyn', valued at £4 per annum. By 1568, an inquisition recorded it functioning as a rectory under the name 'Fecullen'. The nineteenth-century parish church that stands on the site today occupies the southern sector of what may be an early ecclesiastical enclosure, the kind of roughly circular or oval boundary, often of considerable antiquity, that frequently underlies later Christian sites in Ireland. The enclosure itself is described as a possible one, meaning its outline can be inferred but not confirmed with certainty. Whether the medieval church preceded or postdated the enclosure is not something the surviving evidence resolves, which is itself a quietly interesting problem.
