Church in ruins, Cooleeshal Beg, Co. Kilkenny

In the Nuenna river valley in County Kilkenny, a medieval church has effectively ceased to exist above ground, not through gradual decay but through deliberate clearance.

The site, known historically as the Church of Cuilisiol, sits on reclaimed land above the flood plain, and today there is nothing at ground level to indicate that anything ever stood there.

When Ordnance Survey officers visited in 1839 and recorded their observations in what became known as the OS Letters, the church was already a substantial ruin, but still a legible one. The east gable was standing to its full height, the south wall reached roughly 2.4 metres, and the north wall had sunk to ground level. The surveyors noted a pointed window in the east gable, narrow and tapering on the outside in the manner common to early ecclesiastical buildings, and a broken window in the south wall. They could find no trace of a doorway except in the vanished north wall, which they inferred must have held it. Local people knew the building as the Church of Cuilisiol, and there was a tradition of burials associated with the site, though the surveyors observed that no formal burial ground was attached. By the time the historian Carrigan wrote about the area in 1905, he could only report that the ruins had been cleared away entirely. The land was reclaimed for agriculture, and the church disappeared into the fields.

What makes this particular absence unusual is how precisely the moment of erasure can be bracketed. Between 1839 and 1905, a building that still had walls, windows, and a named local identity was removed so thoroughly that it left no surface trace. The tradition of burials in the vicinity means the ground itself may still hold something, but the church that once gave the place its name is gone without so much as a foundation course to mark where it stood.
