Church (in ruins), Okyle, Co. Waterford

What makes the ruin at Okyle quietly arresting is not its age, or even its state of collapse, but a small stone chamber tucked against the base of the east gable, barely large enough to lie down in, fitted with three musket loops. Religious buildings do not typically come equipped for defensive fire, and yet here, in a modest chapel in the Mocollop parish of County Waterford, someone saw fit to add exactly that.

The surviving east gable preserves the remains of a 15th-century twin-light tracery window, the kind of paired opening divided by a central stone mullion and finished with decorative stonework above, a detail that suggests the building carried some architectural ambition even if it functioned as a chapel-of-ease, a secondary place of worship serving parishioners who lived too far from the main parish church to attend regularly. The projecting stone-roofed chamber at the north end of the gable measures roughly 1.66 metres east to west and 1.45 metres north to south, and its three musket loops indicate it was added, or at least conceived, with the possibility of attack in mind. Whether this reflects the wider turbulence of the post-Reformation period in Munster, when churches became contested and sometimes militarised spaces, is not recorded, but the combination of devotional tracery and gun slits in a single gable face is an unusual one. Around 1840, the antiquarian John O'Donovan noted that the north wall was still largely standing, including the base of a window near its eastern end. That wall has since reduced considerably. There is no evidence of a surrounding enclosure or of burials, which makes Okyle unusual among rural medieval churches in Ireland, where a graveyard or at least a boundary ditch is almost always present.
