Inishmaine is a small island in Lough Mask, County Mayo, and on it sits the remains of a medieval church that most people travelling through Connacht will never think to look for.
Islands in Irish loughs frequently served as monastic sites in the early Christian period, offering both seclusion and a degree of natural defence, and Inishmaine fits that pattern. The ruins are modest by the standards of better-documented ecclesiastical sites, but their setting, out on the water and away from the main roads, gives them a quiet gravity that more accessible monuments rarely manage.
