Church, Killuntin, Co. Cork

In the grounds of Killuntin House in County Cork, there is a church that has entirely ceased to exist, at least above ground.

No stone marks the spot, no outline breaks the grass, and whatever once defined the place has dissolved so completely into the landscape that even the graveyard beside it has vanished from view. What remains is cartographic: the 1842 Ordnance Survey six-inch map records a rectangular building labelled simply "site of church", accompanied by a dotted circular outline marking the graveyard. The dotted line is doing a great deal of work. It suggests something already gone by the time the surveyors arrived, documented in the past tense even in the nineteenth century.

The site is associated with Cill Fhionntain, meaning Fintan's Church, a dedication recorded by the scholar Power in 1917. Fintan was a reasonably common name among early Irish saints, and the prefix "cill", referring to a small early Christian church or cell, appears throughout Irish placenames as a marker of early medieval religious settlement. The circular earthen enclosure that once surrounded the graveyard, of the kind Power describes as "the usual circular type", is a feature typical of early Irish ecclesiastical sites, where the boundary between sacred and secular ground was defined by a raised earthen bank. A local man interviewed by Power recalled the graveyard as still legible in his memory, enclosed by just such a bank, though by the time the twentieth century arrived there was nothing left to see. The site now sits within the private grounds of Killuntin House, leaving it inaccessible in addition to invisible.
