Church, Labbamolaga Middle, Co. Cork

A small ruined church sitting just a few metres from a later medieval building at the same site might seem unremarkable, but the older structure at Labbamolaga Middle carries a detail that sets it apart: a heart-shaped finial stone, illustrated by Crawford in 1914, with two sunken panels and projecting wings, which is thought to have once crowned the gable.

That singular carved stone, wherever it now rests, hints at a degree of ornamental ambition not always expected in a building measuring barely six and a half metres from end to end.

The church is dated by Leask, writing in 1955, to the 9th or 10th century, and was identified by Power in 1932 as Eidhnen Molaga, the chief church of Tuath O Cuscraidh Sleibhe, the territory associated with the early Irish saint Molaga. It sits within an early ecclesiastical enclosure, the broader complex including a graveyard and the later church a few metres to the north. The building is rectangular and features antae, which are projecting extensions of the side walls beyond the gable ends, a characteristic detail of early Irish stone churches. The western doorway survives with its original sandstone jambs and lintel; the jambs lean slightly inward at the top, and the opening is framed by a projecting architrave. Stonework above this doorway is a later restoration by the Office of Public Works, based on a sketch recorded by Leask. As recently as 1845, according to Cochrane writing in 1912, the east gable and its window were still intact, along with a stone altar and a window in the south wall; none of those features remain visible today. Inside, a tomb known as St Molaga's Bed survives, and loose sandstone fragments on site include a hollowed half-cylindrical piece that may once have been part of a column or cross-shaft, and a cut fragment that could belong to a round-arched window head.
