Church, Lissycurrig, Co. Kerry

At Lissycurrig in County Kerry, something that was once a functioning church had already become a memory by the time the Ordnance Survey returned for a second look.

The site appears on the 1841 to 1842 OS map simply as a church, surrounded by what appears to be a graveyard. On a later edition of the same map, the label has quietly shifted to 'Church (site of)', that small parenthetical marking the difference between a building and an absence.

The change in designation tells a compressed story. Between one survey and the next, whatever structure stood at Lissycurrig ceased to be considered a standing church and became instead a place where a church had once been. The graveyard, however, appears to have persisted, as graveyards often do long after the buildings they accompanied have gone. In rural Ireland this pattern is common enough: ecclesiastical sites that may have served a parish for centuries gradually fell out of use, were left to decay, or simply disappeared into the ground, leaving the burial ground as the only legible evidence that something organised and communal had once happened there.
