Church, Lullymore, Co. Kildare

Somewhere beneath the surface of a graveyard on the island of Lullymore, Co. Kildare, there may lie the remnants of an early church, though by 1987 any trace of it had effectively vanished from view. What had once been described as plainly discernible foundations was erased, not by centuries of slow decay, but by a thorough clean-up of the graveyard that left the ground level clear of whatever had remained.

The earliest reference comes from Comerford, quoted by O'Leary writing between 1906 and 1908, who described the site as a former parochial church on what he called the island of Lullymore, a low-lying area set within the bogland of the Bog of Allen. In 1965, the archaeologist Rynne examined the site and noted traces of a mortared stone structure aligned east to west, the standard orientation of early Christian churches, with the altar end facing east. He judged that these traces may well represent the remains of an early church. That careful, hedged language is telling: enough survived then to suggest antiquity, but not quite enough to be certain. The site sits within a wider early ecclesiastical complex at Lullymore, indicating that whatever church once stood here was part of a more substantial religious presence in the area.

The graveyard itself still exists, but the structural remains of the church are no longer visible above ground. What was once a legible fragment of stone and mortar has been swallowed, partly by time and partly by tidiness.
