Church, Mogeely, Co. Cork

At the centre of a graveyard in Mogeely, east Cork, a roofless rectangular church has been slowly dissolving into the landscape.

The west wall is gone entirely, the remaining three walls are ivy-clad and in poor structural condition, and the building measures roughly 18.6 metres east to west and 8.6 metres north to south. What survives is fragmentary: part of the west ingoing of a doorway near the west end of the south wall, and a collapsed opening in the east wall that, when the antiquarian Coleman examined it in the early twentieth century, he recorded as a two-light lancet window still intact. A lancet window is a tall, narrow window with a pointed arch, common in medieval ecclesiastical architecture. That it has since collapsed makes Coleman's early description the only record of how it appeared standing.

The church was the parish church of Mogeely, and its ruined state has a specific historical cause. Samuel Lewis, writing in 1837, noted that it had been destroyed in the war of 1641, the uprising that began in Ulster and spread through much of Ireland, bringing widespread destruction to settlements and buildings across the country. The graveyard surrounding the ruin continued in use long after the church itself fell. Among the chest tombs and headstones crowded into the interior, Coleman noted inscriptions dated 1701 and 1704, meaning that within living memory of the building's destruction, people were still being buried among its walls and marking those burials with carved stone.

The chest tombs, box-shaped raised monuments that were a common form of post-medieval memorial in Ireland, give the interior an unusually dense quality, the dead arranged within the footprint of a building that no longer properly exists above them. Visitors approaching the site will find the church sitting within the working graveyard, reachable on foot, with the surviving walls visible though heavily overgrown.
