Church, Rehill, Co. Tipperary

In the corner of a graveyard in rural Tipperary, a low scatter of large stones and a rubble sandstone core are all that remain to suggest there was ever a church here at all.

The wall section, just two metres wide and barely more than half a metre high on its interior face, would be easy to pass without a second glance. What makes it worth pausing over is the category it occupies: not a ruined medieval parish church with standing gables and carved doorways, but something older and less legible, described in the early twentieth century simply as a primitive church site.

The antiquarian Patrick Power noted the association in 1908, linking the spot to a class of early ecclesiastical enclosure that predates the formal parish system introduced to Ireland in the twelfth century. Sites of this kind, often marked by little more than a boundary, a burial ground, and a folk memory of sanctity, were once scattered across the Irish landscape in considerable numbers. At Rehill, the physical evidence is concentrated at the north-western corner of the existing graveyard, where the large stones that delimit the wall edge may represent the last visible fragment of whatever structure once stood here. The site sits on a north-east-facing slope in gently rolling pastureland, with a stream running roughly 300 metres to the north-east and another about 400 metres to the south, a configuration that is not unusual for early Christian foundations, which were often sited near water without being directly exposed to flooding.
