Church, Shean, Co. Cork

Some places survive only as names, and Killishal is very nearly one of them.

In the townland of Shean Lower in County Cork, north of a crossing known as Gothic Bridge, there is an area that the 1842 Ordnance Survey six-inch map shows as tree-covered ground. Somewhere within it, or near it, stood a church. No stone remains above the surface today, no foundation line, no earthwork. The site is known primarily because of what its name once said about it.

The Irish form, Cill Íseal, translates as "low church", a plain descriptive name suggesting a building that sat in a hollow or at a lower elevation than its surroundings. The placename Killishal appears on both the 1842 and 1937 Ordnance Survey six-inch maps, though it shifts position slightly between them, sitting at the centre of the neighbouring townland of Killard on the earlier map and moving to that townland's north-western quadrant by the later one. Writing in 1986, a local historian named O'Donoghue placed Killishal to the north-east of Killard and noted that it had at one time been a townland in its own right, suggesting it once carried enough administrative weight to be mapped and named as a distinct unit of land. Local information has since pointed more precisely to Shean Lower as the location of the church itself.

What makes this site quietly unusual is precisely its absence. There is no structure to examine, no carved stonework to photograph, only a placename that has drifted across maps for nearly two centuries, anchoring a memory of a building that may have left no physical trace whatsoever. The trees marked on the 1842 map may still be there, or their successors may be, shading ground that has never been formally excavated.
