Church, Wallstown, Co. Cork

A building that appears on an 1842 Ordnance Survey map with two different names, labelled 'Church' at one end and 'School Ho.

' at the other, is already an unusual thing. The structure near Wallstown in north Cork was genuinely both at once, a single slate-roofed rectangle divided internally into four rooms, with sash windows along the nave walls, a chimney stack on the west gable, and a small chancel tucked onto the east end. That combination of domestic fireplace and liturgical chancel, of schoolroom panelling and bluntly-pointed ecclesiastical windows, was not the result of later conversion but was apparently the original arrangement from the outset.

The building was put up in 1841 by George John Gwynne, who received a grant to construct a school close to Wallstown Rectory. The licence he obtained allowed him to use the same structure for divine service in the meantime, on the understanding that a proper parish church would eventually be built nearby. It never was. So the building continued in its hybrid role, a workaround that became permanent by default. The interior reflected this dual function in its layout: three crossing walls divided the space into an entrance hall, a panelled central room with a fireplace, a western end hall also with a fireplace, and a narrow eastern room that incorporated the chancel. It was modest in scale, the nave measuring sixteen metres east to west and just over five metres north to south, with the chancel barely adding two further metres. The whole thing was rendered over random rubble, giving it the plain appearance of a rural schoolhouse rather than anything ecclesiastical. It stood within roughly 450 metres of an older, already ruined Wallstown Church, which had presumably been the original place of worship before falling into disuse. The building was demolished in 1990.
