Cist, Annagh More, Co. Wexford

In the valley of the River Bann in County Wexford, a prehistoric burial was uncovered in 1948 that raised more questions than it answered.

The find was a cist, a small stone-lined grave of the type commonly associated with Bronze Age burial practice in Ireland, in which a corpse or cremated remains were placed within a box formed from upright slabs and covered with a capstone. What made the discovery at Annagh More particularly intriguing was not the cist itself but what accompanied the reports of it: suggestions that other cists lay nearby, a cluster of ancient burials in the same ground. Those reports could not be confirmed.

The site sits in a gentle valley carved by the River Bann, which runs on a northeast to southwest axis through this part of Wexford. The stream lies roughly 200 metres to the southeast, and Laraheen Hill rises beyond it at about 1.3 kilometres distance. It is the kind of topography that recurs around prehistoric burial sites, low-lying ground near water, overlooked by higher terrain, though whether that setting was deliberate or incidental is the sort of question archaeology rarely settles cleanly. The 1948 discovery was documented by Hartnett and Prendergast, whose 1953 publication recorded both the confirmed find and the uncertain rumours of further cists in the vicinity. That uncertainty has remained unresolved, leaving open the possibility that this small valley once held a wider burial landscape, now lost to time or simply awaiting closer attention.
