Cist, Kinnagoe, Co. Donegal

About fifty years ago, workers removing sand at Kinnagoe in County Donegal made an unexpected discovery: a stone cist buried beneath the ground.

These ancient burial chambers, typically constructed from stone slabs forming a box-like structure, were commonly used across Ireland during the Bronze Age, roughly 4,000 years ago. Inside this particular cist lay an urn, likely containing cremated remains; a typical burial practice of the period when communities carefully interred their dead in ceramic vessels.

The find at Kinnagoe represents just one of countless archaeological treasures scattered throughout Donegal, a county whose landscape holds evidence of human activity stretching back to the Mesolithic period. Such discoveries often occur by chance during construction or agricultural work, offering brief windows into prehistoric life. The urn itself would have been crafted by hand, possibly decorated with distinctive patterns that helped archaeologists date and understand the burial customs of the people who once inhabited this corner of northwest Ireland.

This information comes from the Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, a comprehensive catalogue compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983. The survey documents field antiquities throughout the county, from ancient stone circles to medieval castles, creating an invaluable record of Donegal's archaeological heritage. Each entry, including the Kinnagoe cist, helps piece together the long story of human settlement in this Atlantic coastal region, where millennia of history lie just beneath the surface, waiting to be uncovered by the next shovel or storm.
