Cist, Tipper, Co. Kildare

In 1930, a stone-lined grave slid out of a sandy pit face during routine extraction work near Tipper in County Kildare, and what came with it had been waiting there, undisturbed, for several thousand years. The cist, a small box-like burial chamber typically constructed from flat slabs, contained a cremation along with two large ceramic vessels described as vase food vessels, or possibly vase urns. The distinction matters in archaeological terms: food vessels are generally associated with accompanied burials of the Early Bronze Age, placed alongside the dead as offerings or provisions, while vase urns tend to serve as the primary container for cremated remains. In this case the ambiguity has not been resolved, which gives the find an additional layer of quiet interest.

What makes the Tipper discovery stranger still is that it was not the first. Some years before the 1930 find, another burial had apparently come to light in the same area, though its nature was not recorded in any detail, leaving it classified simply as a burial of unknown character. The two discoveries together suggest that this corner of Kildare may once have served as a place of repeated or communal interment during the Bronze Age, though the sand workings that revealed both burials also ensured that little archaeological context survived either of them. The 1930 cremation and its accompanying vessels passed into the collections of the National Museum of Ireland, where the physical record of the find is held.
