Clifden Railway Station, Galway Road, Clifden, Co. Galway

It is the kind of decorative attention that a functional railway building did not strictly need, yet Clifden's station got it anyway, and enough of it survives to still read clearly across the two linked blocks that make up the complex.

The station was built in 1895, an L-plan arrangement combining a two-storey block with a long, five-bay single-storey range that held the ticket office and waiting room. Camber-headed windows, some paired or grouped in threes on the north gable, sit under limestone sills and moulded brick jambs, while a round vent with a timber louvre and rubbed brick surround punctuates the eastern gable. To the east stands the former goods shed, originally a plainer two-bay single-storey structure of rubble limestone with red brick quoins, its entrances marked by camber-headed openings and the wrought-iron rails that once carried sliding doors. The whole group has since been sympathetically renovated, with later additions, a two-storey extension to the west and a raised upper floor on the goods shed, worked in without disrupting the original unity of the site. What makes the complex worth pausing over is less any single feature than the completeness of it: station building, platform block and goods shed all retained together, still legible as the working parts of a single railway operation rather than fragments scattered piecemeal.

The goods shed's new life as a performance space is perhaps the most telling detail. A building that once handled freight now gathers people for a different kind of exchange, and that shift, rather than erasing the site's railway character, sits alongside it. The painted timber station signs still fixed to the eastern extension are worth looking for, small survivals that anchor the building to its original purpose even as its rooms have found other uses.
