Inside the great stone enclosure of Dún Eoghanachta on Inis Mór, three small rectangular buildings are pressed against the inner face of the western cashel wall as though sheltering from the Atlantic beyond.
They are clochans, early medieval dry-stone structures associated with monastic and secular settlement across the west of Ireland, and what makes this particular cluster quietly arresting is how deliberately they are arranged: one against the next, sharing walls, their doorways oriented with care, the whole group hugging the cashel's perimeter in a way that speaks of considered, practical use of space within a defended enclosure.
