What makes this particular structure quietly remarkable is its floor plan: rather than the simple circular interior typical of such buildings, this one was recorded as having its interior divided into two distinct chambers, one D-shaped and one circular, all contained within an overall oval outline.

The detail comes from the antiquarian George Victor Du Noyer, who documented the structure in 1858, describing its unusual dual-chamber arrangement. His account was later cited by the archaeologist R.A.S. Macalister in 1899, suggesting the site had attracted sustained scholarly interest even as it continued to deteriorate. By the time the Dingle Peninsula Archaeological Survey was compiled in 1986, the clochan was already described as much ruined, and the identification of it as the same building Du Noyer had recorded was made on the basis of the plan matching his description. Whether early medieval or later in origin, clochans of this kind are associated throughout the Dingle Peninsula with early Christian monastic settlement and pastoral farming, though the specific history of this one at Fán remains difficult to reconstruct in the absence of further excavation or documentation.
