Coogan Fort, Cregg, Co. Meath

On the Ordnance Survey six-inch maps, the name "Coogan Fort" is picked out in gothic lettering, the typeface traditionally reserved for ancient monuments, which is a small signal that something older than the surrounding landscape is being marked.

What that lettering points to is a rath, an enclosed circular settlement of the early medieval period, sitting towards the southern end of a north-northwest to south-southeast ridge in Cregg, County Meath. What makes the site quietly arresting is the detail of its survival: the whole earthwork remains unplanted in the middle of a coniferous forest, a grass-covered clearing holding its shape while the trees press in around it.

The monument is double-banked, a form sometimes associated with higher-status settlement. The inner bank, roughly five metres wide at its base, rises about a metre and a half on the outside; it is separated from an outer bank by a fosse, or ditch, that spans seven to eight metres across the top. The circular interior measures around thirty-four metres across at its widest. At the east-southeast, where the entrance gap cuts through both banks, a slight causeway carries the old threshold, and the banks on either side of this opening retain some stone facing, a detail that suggests a degree of care in the original construction. Just inside, slightly south-west of centre, a grass-covered platform roughly nine metres in diameter marks the footprint of a hut site, its edge defined by stones, the ground still rising a little above the surrounding interior. It is the kind of detail that turns a landscape feature into a former place of habitation.
