Corn Mill, Terramount, Co. Cork

Beneath the floor of a four-storey mill building on the eastern bank of the Shanowen river, a wheel-pit lies covered over, its function long since redundant.

The structure above it, however, is still standing: a rectangular, six-bay flour mill in Rathcormack, County Cork, carrying a date plaque on its eastern elevation that reads "Rathcormack Mills 1833".

The mill appears on the 1842 Ordnance Survey six-inch map, already named and operating, with a mill race, the channel that directed water to drive the wheel, shown approaching from the east and running directly through the centre of the building. That arrangement, with water channelled into the heart of the structure rather than around its edge, was a practical solution for maximising the force available to the wheel. The building itself is substantial: four storeys, six bays along its length, oriented north to south. A stone-built addition at its southern end, also visible on the 1842 map and running to three storeys across three bays, now serves as a dwelling house. The mill remained in working use until the 1960s and has seen occasional use since, which makes it something rarer than a ruin: a piece of early nineteenth-century industrial Cork that has not entirely stopped.

The site today is surrounded by low modern buildings, and the mill race no longer runs as it once did. The date plaque on the east elevation is the clearest single detail to look for, a small piece of carved stone that fixes the building in a specific moment, 1833, when the grain trade along the Blackwater valley was still a serious business.
