Main Houses
There is a country house at Ballinvrokig in County Cork that sits just outside the usual circuits of heritage tourism, its exact history quiet enough that even the surrounding landscape seems reluctant to give much away.
Country houses of this kind were once scattered across rural Cork in considerable numbers, many of them built or remodelled during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries by landed families whose fortunes rose and fell with the agricultural economy, the political upheavals of the period, and the seismic changes that followed the Land Acts and the War of Independence. Some survived intact, others were burned, subdivided, or simply left to the slow work of ivy and damp. Ballinvrokig sits somewhere in that long, complicated story.
