Country house, Ballynagar, Co. Galway

In the townland of Ballynagar, in County Galway, a country house exists in the records without much of a story attached to it.

The designation alone, a country house set apart from village and town, implies a particular kind of Irish architectural and social history: the large rural residence, generally built for the landed gentry during the eighteenth or nineteenth centuries, standing at the centre of an estate that shaped the landscape around it through field walls, gate lodges, and planted demesnes. That such a building exists at Ballynagar is notable; that so little has been documented about it only adds to its quiet anonymity.
