Country house, Carrignacurra, Co. Cork

There is nothing left to visit at Carrignacurra, and that absence is itself the story.

A country house that once rose to three storeys, six bays wide across its north elevation, stood in the farmyard immediately east of Carrignacurra Castle in County Cork until the 1990s, when it fell completely. The stone was cleared away. Even the single carved stone that survived into the survey period, kept on display in the farmyard after the collapse, was stolen not long afterwards.

What little is known about the house comes from physical traces recorded before its final disappearance, and from local memory. The interior had retained a large fireplace fitted with a brick-domed bread oven, roughly 65 centimetres in diameter, of the kind commonly built into the back or side of a hearth in Irish farmhouses and minor gentry residences of the eighteenth century. A stone-built lean-to at the rear had been used as a milking parlour. The inscribed stone that was later stolen bore the name Jasper Masters Esq and the date 17 May 1777, suggesting either a building or renovation date connected to that individual. A second inscribed stone, now lost, reportedly carried the earlier date of 1723, hinting at a longer building history on the site. The relationship between those two dates, and whether Jasper Masters was an owner, a builder, or simply the person who commissioned the stonework, is no longer recoverable.

By the time monitoring took place adjacent to the site in 2018, confirmed by local historian Tony Miller, all physical traces had gone. The house exists now only in the archaeological record made before it fell, and in the gap it leaves beside the castle.
