Country house, Coole, Co. Cork

A modest country house in County Cork carries a name that sits quietly in plain sight, overlooking an old church to the southeast, its five-bay facade and rusticated limestone quoins suggesting rather more ambition than its rural surroundings might lead you to expect.

What makes it worth a second look is the name attached to its design: Davis Duckart, one of the most accomplished architects working in eighteenth-century Ireland, a man whose more celebrated works include the Custom House in Limerick and Castletown Cox in County Kilkenny.

The house at Coole was built in the mid-eighteenth century for Henry Peard, and the attribution to Duckart, a Sardinian-born architect who left a distinctive mark on the Georgian landscape of Munster, lends it a significance that belies its relatively plain setting. The building follows a composed and formal arrangement: two storeys over a basement, with a central three-bay breakfront, the slightly projecting central section that was a standard device for giving a flat facade a sense of depth and hierarchy. A fanlight sits above the central doorway, and directly above it a round-headed window punctuates the first floor, drawing the eye upward along the building's central axis. The sash windows are framed with shouldered architraves, the slight angular projection at the top corners of each frame being a detail associated with mid-Georgian taste. The walls are built in random rubble sandstone, the irregularity of the stonework offset by the more precisely cut rusticated limestone quoins at the corners. The hipped roof, where the slopes come together at all four sides rather than ending in gables, appears to be a nineteenth-century alteration to the original design.

Duckart's involvement is not fully documented and remains an attribution rather than a certainty, but his known work in the region suggests the connection is plausible. The house sits in that category of Georgian architecture in Ireland that has survived largely through quiet obscurity rather than prominent preservation, its refined proportions legible to anyone who pauses long enough to read them.
