Main Houses
In the rolling farmland of Kilmaloda, in the west of County Cork, there is recorded the presence of a country house whose details have largely slipped from view.
It appears in the architectural and historical record, but the specifics of its form, its builders, and its fate remain elusive, which is itself a kind of story. Rural Cork lost a considerable number of its country houses over the course of the twentieth century, through burning during the War of Independence and the Civil War, through abandonment, or simply through the slow attrition of neglect once the estates that sustained them were broken up under land reform legislation.
