Country house, Nadrid, Co. Cork

In the townland of Nadrid in mid Cork, a country house has been quietly losing the battle against vegetation for a very long time.

What makes it worth pausing over is not any grand association or dramatic ruin, but a particular combination of features that suggests a building with an interesting later history: a collapsed main structure alongside a lower, three-bay addition that was built or remodelled in a castellated style, complete with hood moulding over the window and door openings. Hood moulding, a projecting stone course designed to throw rainwater away from an aperture, was a common decorative and practical feature in Gothic Revival work, and its presence here points to deliberate architectural ambition at some point in the building's life, even if the house itself never rose to great prominence.

The site appears on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1842, which places it alongside a square fish pond to the north-east of the house. Square fish ponds of this kind were a standard feature of managed estates from the medieval period onward, used to keep fresh fish readily available for the household. By the time the map was made, both the house and its pond were presumably still legible as functioning parts of a property; today, the pond is as overgrown as the building itself. The two-storey castellated addition survives in better condition than the main house, though neither is in anything approaching a maintained state. No builder, owner, or date of construction is recorded for the site, so the house remains anonymous in that respect, a piece of mid Cork's landed landscape that has left no particular paper trail beyond its physical outline on an early map and the stones still standing among the undergrowth.
