Cromlech, Lattonfasky, Co. Monaghan

In the hills of County Monaghan, a mound of grass and furze sits quietly on a west-facing slope, carrying two quite different names.

The first, recorded in gothic lettering on the 1834 Ordnance Survey six-inch map, calls it a cromlech, a term used loosely in the nineteenth century for megalithic structures of various kinds. The second name, appearing on the 1907 edition, is considerably more evocative: Labbyfirmore, from the Irish meaning the bed of the big men, the kind of folklore name that suggests local people once understood this place to hold something ancient and imposing, even if they had no precise word for what it was.

The monument itself is a roughly circular cairn, a mound of accumulated stone and earth, around twenty metres in diameter. Within it, at least three stone cists survive, each a small box-like chamber formed from upright slabs and a covering roof-stone, the kind of structure used in prehistoric Ireland to hold the remains of the dead. The first and most visible cist has a large capstone resting on two long side-stones and a single end-stone. A second, to the south-west, is more elaborate, its roof-stone carried on six slender uprights. The third is barely legible, only a partial roof-stone showing at the surface, complicated further by a field bank running east to west that crosses over the northern part of the cairn, an agricultural intrusion that has buried and obscured whatever lies beneath. The cairn is covered in grass and furze, which gives it the look of a natural rise to anyone not specifically looking for it.
