A structure called Cromwell's Castle in County Galway carries the weight of one of the most turbulent periods in Irish history, and yet the site at Esker sits quietly outside the wider record, its details undocumented in publicly available form. Across Ireland, dozens of earthworks, tower houses, and fortified enclosures were attributed to Cromwellian forces during and after the 1650s campaign, sometimes accurately, sometimes simply because local memory needed a villain to attach to a ruin.
