Cross, Ceathrú An Lisín, Co. Galway

A modest slab of stone, not quite waist-high, stands at the eastern end of a leacht beside the ruins of a church known as Templesaghtmacree in Ceathrú An Lisín, County Galway.

At 0.68 metres tall and 0.43 metres across its arms, it is easy to overlook, yet the care taken in its carving and its placement within this small ecclesiastical complex suggests it was never incidental.

The cross is cruciform in outline, meaning it follows the classic four-armed shape, with a solid disc formed at the point where the arms meet the shaft, a feature that connects it to a wider tradition of early Irish stone crosses. On its eastern face, a two-line Latin cross has been incised directly into the surface, a simple but deliberate act of marking. It sits on a leacht, which is a low rectangular stone monument associated with early Christian devotional practice, often used as a station for prayer. The leacht here lies immediately to the south of Templesaghtmacree, a church whose name gestures at a forgotten dedication. The cross itself shows the wear of centuries; a crack in the slab was repaired at some point with cement, a practical intervention that preserved the stone even if it left a visible seam. The site is recorded in the work of Higgins (1987) and Gosling (1993), both of whom documented the early Christian monuments of the region.
