Cross-inscribed stone, Cahernarry, Co. Limerick

In the centre of a graveyard in County Limerick, a slim slate slab stands upright in the ground, its face carved with a Latin cross whose arms flare outward at each tip in what are known as expanded terminals, a decorative flourish common on early medieval Irish stonework that gives the cross a slightly formal, almost heraldic quality.

The stone is modest by any measure, just under sixty centimetres tall and thirty centimetres wide, not much bigger than a large hardback book, and yet it has been set deliberately upright and inscribed with evident care, suggesting it once marked something considered worth marking.

The slab was recorded formally in 2004 as part of the Sites and Monuments Record for County Limerick, compiled with a description noting its rectangular shape, its slate composition, and the incised cross carved onto its west-facing face. The graveyard in which it sits, on a north-west facing slope, carries the reference LI013-062002, while the ruins of Cahernarry Church, which lie just to the north, carry their own separate record as LI013-062001. The association between the two is typical of early Irish ecclesiastical sites, where a church, however ruined, and a burial ground developed together over centuries, with small inscribed stones sometimes serving as grave markers, boundary indicators, or simple acts of devotion.

The graveyard at Cahernarry is not a difficult place to find, sitting as it does alongside the church ruins that give the townland much of its visible character. The inscribed stone occupies the centre of the burial ground, so a visitor moving through the space should encounter it without too much searching. The carving is on the west face, which tends to catch softer, lower light in the afternoon, and that is generally the better time to pick out incised detail that might otherwise read as flat shadow. Because the slab is relatively small and set among other grave markers, it rewards a slow look rather than a quick scan.
