Cross-inscribed stone, Cill Mhuire, Co. Kerry

At a holy well on the Dingle Peninsula, a small stone bearing a plain Latin cross cut into its eastern face marks a site that has drawn people in devotion for centuries.

The stone stands above Tobar Eoin Baiste, St. John the Baptist's Well, at Cill Mhuire, and its simplicity is part of what makes it quietly arresting. There is no elaborate carving, no ornate iconography; just a clean incised cross on a modest upright stone, the kind of marker that speaks to an early and unshowy form of Christian practice.

The well is associated with the feast of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist, observed on the 29th of August, and rounds are still made there on that date. A pattern, meaning a gathering for prayer, socialising, and sometimes music centred on a holy well or saint's site, was formerly held on the same day. The existence of such patterns at Irish holy wells stretches back well into the medieval period and beyond, though many were suppressed or declined during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. That rounds continue here on the 29th of August suggests a persistence of local devotional practice that has outlasted the broader pattern tradition. The site appears in Catriona Ó Danachair's 1960 survey of holy wells, and was later recorded in the Corca Dhuibhne archaeological survey published in 1986 by J. Cuppage.
