Cross-inscribed stone, Cinn Aird Thoir, Co. Kerry

Crosses & Monuments
In a graveyard at Cinn Aird Thoir in County Kerry, a rough block of old red sandstone does two jobs at once.
It marks a burial, designated in survey records as Grave No. 400, and it carries a deeply inscribed cross cut into its face. The combination is not unusual in Irish early medieval contexts, where simple cross-inscribed stones served both as devotional objects and as grave markers, but the plainness of this one is striking. It has not been dressed or shaped with any particular care; the stone is roughly hewn, the kind of object that could be walked past without a second glance.
