Cross-inscribed stones are among the more understated survivals of early Christian Ireland, typically rough-hewn boulders or slabs into which a cross was cut, often without mortar, foundation, or any accompanying structure. They could mark a boundary, a burial, a place of prayer, or simply the outer reach of a monastic community's influence. The inscription itself, a few careful lines scored into rock, was sometimes enough.
