Crosses & Monuments
In the townland of Glendaduff in County Mayo, a stone carrying an incised cross survives from an era when such markings served purposes both devotional and territorial.
Cross-inscribed stones are among the most quietly persistent artefacts of early Christian Ireland, typically cut with a simple Latin or Greek cross directly into a boulder or slab, sometimes at a site of religious significance, sometimes marking a boundary, and sometimes commemorating an individual whose name has long since been forgotten. They are easy to overlook and difficult to date with precision, which is part of what makes them interesting.
