Cross-inscribed stone, Lullymore, Co. Kildare

Built into the wall of a graveyard at Lullymore is a small sandstone slab, measuring just 31 centimetres by 21 centimetres, that carries three crosses on its face: one broad central cross with two smaller incised crosses flanking its shaft. It is modest enough to walk past without noticing, and that quality of quiet concealment is part of what makes it interesting. The stone is one of three such cross-inscribed slabs set into the same graveyard wall, all of them remnants of an early monastic site at Lullymore, a place that once supported a community whose members left their mark on stone in this characteristically early Irish fashion.

Cross-inscribed stones of this kind, where a simple cross form is cut or pecked into a slab rather than sculpted in relief, are associated with early Christian monasticism in Ireland, often serving as grave markers or devotional objects within a monastic enclosure. The Lullymore site appears to have been unusually rich in them. The stone in the graveyard wall is catalogued as 'Cross 12' in M. Kelly's 2006 study of the material. It is not alone in having been displaced from its original context: seven other cross-inscribed stones and two cross-slabs from the same graveyard were removed and incorporated into a memorial dating to 1798, scattering the collection across different settings. A further cross-inscribed stone from the site is now held at the Bog of Allen Nature Centre Museum, where it can be examined more closely than those mortared into walls.
