Market crosses were traditionally erected at the centre of trading places, functioning as both a religious focal point and a marker of civic sanction for commerce. This one has been moved at least once from the position recorded on early Ordnance Survey mapping, and may have been relocated before that too, meaning its current indoor setting is only the latest chapter in a longer history of displacement.

The cross stands 1.66 metres high, with arms spanning 0.76 metres, and is set into a truncated pyramidal base. What makes it particularly worth attention is the carving. The east face carries a crucifixion figure, Christ depicted wearing a short tunic, rendered in high relief with a directness that reads more as Romanesque than Gothic in feeling. The north and south sides are decorated with zoomorphic interlace, patterns built from interwoven animal forms, a style with deep roots in early medieval Irish and insular manuscript art. Scholars Peter Harbison and Harold Leask, whose work on Irish high crosses and ecclesiastical architecture remains foundational, both recorded this cross, placing it within a wider tradition of carved stone work in the region.

Visitors to the Brockagh Visitor Centre can view the cross at close quarters, which is one advantage of its indoor setting. The quality of the carving on the side panels, easy to miss in outdoor light or at a distance, is far more legible here, and the relief work on the crucifixion figure rewards a slow look.
