Some places make it onto the archaeological record precisely because they have disappeared.
In the centre of Cloyne, on the north side of Rock Street, there once stood a large wooden cross that served as the town's market cross, the kind of structure that historically marked the civic and commercial heart of an Irish settlement, a fixed point around which trade was licensed and community life organised. Nothing of it remains today, not a fragment, not a socket stone, not even a depression in the ground that might betray where it once stood.
