Cross, Rathwire, Co. Westmeath

At the roadside in Rathwire, Co. Westmeath, a stone shaft stands quietly inscribed with a request that has gone unanswered for over four centuries: "Good Christian pray for the soule of John O Mlaghlin.

" The cross is one of three wayside crosses once associated with this spot, but the only one that has never moved. Beside the shaft, set into the ground, is a flat stone, its purpose once entirely practical: passing funeral processions would stop here, rest the coffin on the slab, and kneel to pray for the souls named in the inscription before continuing on their way. It is a small, worn monument, but the ritual it once anchored was a genuine part of local devotional life.

The shaft, which stands 1.43 metres high, carries inscriptions carved in false relief, running vertically up both its broad faces and meant to be read from bottom to top. The east face commemorates John O Mlaghlin, who died on the 14th of August 1601; the west face commemorates Jovan Hughes, his wife, who departed on the 13th of September of the same year. Both, according to local tradition, were killed by a runaway horse. The cross was erected by or for the Hughes family, and the surname appears in early references to the monument. The top of the shaft is broken, which has truncated the inscription at a frustrating point; the date on the east face cuts off after "16", and the month on the west face loses its final letters. Despite this, the lettering that survives is, remarkably, still quite legible. A mortise socket at the broken top suggests a crosshead was once fitted there, long since lost. The shaft now sits in a modern rubble stone base, replacing whatever original setting it once had.
