Cross-slab, Ardnagrena, Co. Cork

A small upright stone in a burial ground at Ardnagrena, Co. Cork, carries more on its surfaces than its modest dimensions might suggest.

Standing just 0.42 metres tall, it rises slightly above the surrounding grave markers, and on closer inspection it reveals three distinct carvings, each on a different face, which together make it quietly stranger than the plain field stones around it.

On the west face, a Latin cross has been incised into the stone, its arms sitting noticeably closer to the base than to the top, giving the composition an unusual internal balance. The south face bears what appears to be a human face, rendered in false relief, a technique where the background is cut away to leave the image slightly proud of the surface, though here the effect is subtle given the small scale, the face measuring roughly 8 by 7 centimetres. The top of the stone adds a further puzzle: a wedge-shaped incised carving, whose function or symbolic intent is not recorded. Whether these three elements were carved at the same time, by the same hand, or represent successive additions is unknown. The stone sits in the north-west quadrant of the burial ground, its long axis running north to south.
