Cross-slab, Baile Iarthach Thuaidh, Co. Cork

A flat-topped standing stone in the townland of Baile Iarthach Thuaidh in west Cork carries not one cross but at least four, cut into its faces across what was presumably a long span of devotional use.

The stone stands just over a metre and a quarter tall, and on its summit is a cross-like carving worked in relief rather than incised into the surface, an unusual detail that sets it apart from the more conventional scratch-cut crosses on its vertical faces. The north-east face bears a Latin cross with expanded shaft terminals, meaning the ends of the arms and shaft flare outward rather than simply stopping flat, a form that recurs across early medieval Irish stonework. The south-west face carries a second Latin cross of similar design, though considerably more worn, and the south-east face shows the faint trace of a third, accompanied by incised markings that remain indecipherable.

The stone appears on the Ordnance Survey six-inch maps of both 1842 and 1902, placing it within the recorded landscape for at least that long, though its origins are almost certainly older. It stands adjacent to Toberkieran, a holy well, the name deriving from St. Kieran, one of the earlier Irish saints associated with the pre-Patrician church. The pairing of a carved stone with a holy well is a familiar arrangement in Irish devotional geography, the two often functioning together as a focus for local pilgrimage. What is less common is the fact that this particular stone is still venerated today, with people visiting on St. Kieran's Day, the 4th of March, continuing a pattern of use that the archaeology around it suggests has been going on for well over a millennium.
