These burial grounds, known in Irish as cillíní, were used for centuries to inter unbaptised infants and others considered ineligible for consecrated ground, and they occupy a distinctive, sometimes melancholy place in the Irish landscape. What makes this particular slab worth pausing over is the carving on its face: a single-line Latin cross whose arms reach all the way to the edges of the stone, giving it an almost architectural severity, and whose shaft ends in an expanded terminal at the top.

The slab measures just 39 centimetres tall, 13 centimetres wide, and 10 centimetres thick, making it a notably modest object. It sits roughly five metres to the south of a second, broken cross-inscribed pillar, suggesting the ground once held at least two carved markers of this kind. The cross form itself, with its splayed or expanded terminal, is a type documented across early medieval Ireland, where stone carving served both devotional and commemorative purposes. The base of the shaft on this slab is no longer visible, buried beneath accumulated soil, so the full original extent of the carving remains uncertain. The site was noted by Crawford in 1913 and later by Higgins in 1987, indicating that scholars have been aware of it for over a century without it attracting particular wider attention.
