Cross-slab, Inishcaltra, Co. Clare

On a small island in Lough Derg, a large flat stone lies in the ground with a name carved into it, a name that has been readable for roughly nine centuries.

The stone is a cross-slab, a type of grave marker common in early medieval Ireland, typically a dressed slab incised with a cross and sometimes an inscription asking for a prayer on behalf of the person buried beneath. This one, lying in the western half of what is known as the Saint's graveyard on Inis Cealtra, carries an inscription running in a single vertical line down the shaft of its carved Latin cross: oróit do Domnall sacart, meaning "a prayer for Domnall the priest." The inscription is partially damaged, with a gap where one letter has been lost, but the meaning is not in much doubt.

The slab was recorded by R. A. S. Macalister in 1916 to 1917, who placed it among stones of twelfth-century type. A later study by Okasha and Forsyth, published in 2001, described it in more detail: it measures 1.27 metres high, 0.51 metres wide, and 0.8 metres thick, and the carved face shows some delamination, meaning the stone surface is beginning to separate in layers, which accounts for part of the inscription's damage. The cross itself is outlined rather than raised, with hollowed angles at the junction of the arms and a rectangular base left open at the bottom, with a faint line marking where the shaft meets the base. It is a restrained, functional design, consistent with the kind of commemorative stonework produced in Irish monasteries during the high medieval period. Inis Cealtra, also known as Holy Island, was a significant ecclesiastical site, and the presence of a priest named Domnall among its dead is entirely in keeping with that long history of religious community on the island.
